Poem
Jealous Self
Poem Reflection
A living piece from the World Poetry Hub library — written to be read, heard, shared, and remembered.
Neatless to say,
I’m a little selfish.
I like to play,
to partake—
sometimes selfishly.
I don’t mind to share.
I can share everything.
I’d even give the shirt off my back—
even my last.
However…
To all beings in existence,
I cannot
L O V E U.
Just know,
it’s not you.
It’s me.
I truly mean it
when I say
it’s me.
Because truth be told…
in terms of understanding,
in terms of giving,
in terms of knowing what love feels like—
I’m already in love.
Yes—
I’m already in love with myself,
and myself
is a jealous self.
So before I ever love you right,
I must honor the love
I gave myself first.
And until that love is complete,
I can’t give away
what already belongs
to me.
